Research Interests

My research focuses on the biology of coral reefs, particularly how these vast ecosystems respond to global climate change and ocean acidification. So far, my published work has spans disciplines from molecular biology to ecology and remote sensing (see laboratory website for more details: www.coralreefecosystems.org), with a particular focus on integrating multiple perspectives to single problems. An example is my work on mass coral bleaching which is involved in identifying the molecular mechanisms associated with stress, verifying its association with warming seas, and investigating its impacts on reef ecosystems. While my much of my research occurs on Heron Island on the southern Great Barrier Reef, I have been heavily involved in research networks and activities from the Red Sea to the Caribbean, and been responsible for initiating global projects supported by the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility, and international education programs such as the Stanford Australia program which I directed and taught for almost 10 years. I am also interested in creating a better dialogue between scientists and wider society, particularly industry and policymakers, has led to work with organisations such as diverse as Rio Tinto, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, State and Federal governments, TNC and WWF. I also operate an active science blog (www.climateshifts.org) and recently accepted the position of Director of the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland.
